ABI ranks Motorola top UHF reader vendor

Monday, July 21, 2008

ABI Research has placed Motorola at the top of its latest worldwide ranking of passive UHF reader vendors. Alien Technology and Impinj filled the second and third slots in what researchers called a tight competition between the industry leaders.

ABI points to a combination of strong shipments, solid product innovation, and persistent market presence from Motorola to earn the top rating in its new Vendor Matrix. The research group ranked the vendors on innovation and implementation.

To determine the innovation leader, ABI Research examined the vendors’ history of delivering innovative products on an ongoing basis, their RF protocol support, the diversity of reader form factors, and the vendors’ track record of using their experience, depth of knowledge, and leadership to drive the industry.

For implementation, the criteria included estimated market share, market persistence (a vendor’s longevity, and therefore positive name recognition and customer trust level, in the passive UHF market), global sales and support reach/distribution channels, and market coverage – the breadth and depth of the application and vertical markets served.

To rank companies, ABI Research uses a Vendor Matrix that ranks a number of factors to create a clear understanding of vendors’ positions in specific markets. The matrix includes only vendors that directly design and deliver products with passive UHF reader capabilities, excluding vendors that provide RFID capabilities only through the optional inclusion of a third-party embeddable reader module. The matrix analyzed a total of fifteen vendors. [end]

GAO RFID has released a Wiegand-to-Ethernet RFID controller designed specifically for door access applications.

The network access controller, model 491018, is able to connect to any type of Wiegand reader such as magnetic stripe reader, RFID reader or fingerprint reader. It also offers a master card for adding or deleting access privileges directly from the external reader, thus acting independently without connection to a network or PC.
