U.S. military to secure ordnance via RFID

Axcess International has announced its Micro-Wireless RFID system will be used by the U.S. military to enable automatic inventory accounting and perimeter security for ordnance assets. Using the Axcess’ Dot tag design, the system uses ultra-small, low cost RFID transmitters assigned to each asset, enabling automatic tracking and automatic security monitoring.

As part of the system, a variety of RFID tags are placed on different armaments. The system’s software allows real time inventory of the tagged items, and tracks their location. Any unauthorized movement of an armament outside the storage area automatically triggers an alert, but the handling of armaments can be linked to authorized service personnel via an RFID personnel badge so authorized movements do not trigger an alert Sensor based tags can also be deployed to report on environmental conditions to which the ordnance is exposed, such as temperature, humidity and shock.

Axcess International’s Micro-Wireless system is based on a “dual-active” architectural design, where the wireless tags lie dormant until activated by a pre-programmed condition or by movement through a wireless activation field at a control point. The tags can signal at regular intervals for easy accounting. The company’s battery-powered Dot tags include bar codes and short range Electronic Product Code RFID capability along with long range transmission capability of up to 1000 feet. [end]
