“Orbiter” tracks athletes in Seattle

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Seattle’s Green Lake Park will soon offer a new service for users of its 2.8 mile lake loop trail.

Starting May 1, runners, walkers, cyclists and in-line skaters who pay a $65 annual membership fee will be issued a RFID tag which can be clipped to their clothes. The tags will be monitored by three scanners placed along the trail. The scanners will tally the laps, times and mileage logged by the athletes, and the data will be available at an on-site video monitor that senses the tags or through a website.

The system, called the “Orbiter” is the brainchild of Tacoma businessman Greg Stewart. He plans to market the Orbiter to other parks worldwide, as well as offering a streamlined, portable, and less expensive version to school physical education departments.
