Canadian nursing home introduces RFID tracking

Monday, April 7, 2008

The Delta View Habilitation Centre, an assisted living residential center located south of Vancouver, British Columbia, has begun using RFID tags to keep track of vital equipment. If tracking equipment is successful, administrators plan to expand the program to help keep an eye on residents suffering from dementia, reports Toronto’s Globe and Mail.

Initially, the center’s wheel chairs, oxygen pumps, and other equipment will be tagged with matchbox-sized RFID transmitters manufactured by Cisco. As the program progresses, smaller tags embedded in wristbands will be issued to patients for whom wandering is a danger.

While this may be the first RFID application of this type in Canada, hospitals worldwide have used tags in a variety of patient-related situations, from RFID tags in newborns’ blankets to deter kidnapping, to microchip implants for Alzheimer patients in Florida.

Texas Instruments (TI) introduced a pair of encapsulated RFID mini-transponders designed for applications in animal tagging and asset tracking.

The 12mm TRPGR30TGC and TRPGP40TGC mini-transponders were developed to enable users a battery-free solution for embedding RFID tags into smaller objects across a broader range of applications. These transponders come ready-to-use and are 100 percent backwards compatible with all of TI’s RFID software and readers including power modules, control modules and micro readers.
