"Smart bottle” records wine’s history

Monday, March 31, 2008 in News

European tech company EProvenance has introduced the “Intelligent Bottle” system to track wine as it travels from maker to consumer, documenting any threats to its quality –from damaging temperature fluctuations to counterfeiting attempts - along the way.

The system consists of a software application and three physical components. A semi-active RFID tag is placed in each wine case, tracks and records temperatures during shipping, as well as enhancing shipping and receiving operations.

A passive RFID tag is attached to the bottom of each bottle, for inventory management and to discourage pilferage. Finally, a tamper-proof neck seal with a covert code authenticates the wine in the bottle and prevents counterfeiting. All components are linked in a high-speed encrypted database which creates an epedigree for each bottle in the system.

The system launched in the Bordeaux region of France but can be used in any wine-producing area.
