Australian states study digital vehicle registration

Austroads, the Australian transit and traffic authority, has formed a multi-state licencing and registration task force to explore the use of RFID tags on vehicles to improve identification and reduce crime.

Some proponents of the technology hope it could be used to increase revenue by using fixed and portable scanners that could detect whether cars are legally registered. Australia has already introduced RFID-type applications for tolling and Austroads is working on a national standard for smart card vehicle licenses.

The island nation of Bermuda is the only country which has so far made use of RFID vehicle registration on a large scale.

Boston-based Revosys has announced that it will implement NFC payment processing in its upcoming “Interactive V5 In-Taxi” advertising system.

According to Revosys, the upgraded Interactive V5 will allow passengers to pay for fares with NFC-enabled mobile phones, contactless credit and debit cards, and traditional magnetic stripe cards.
