VeriChip's FoxNews.com Segment Focuses on Glucose-Monitoring RFID Chip

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

RFID healthcare provider VeriChip Corporation’s development plans for a self-contained implantable RFID glucose-sensing microchip this week won a spot on FoxNews.com for a segment narrated by Dr. Manny Alvarez, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Science at Hackensack University Medical Center (and the FoxNews.com health managing editor).

A similar segment is also expected to be covered on Fox News Channel during the course of the day. The segment discusses the potential benefits of the self-contained implantable RFID glucose-sensing device for patients with diabetes. VeriChip and parent company Digital Angel say they expect the glucose-sensing microchip will be the first device able to measure glucose levels in the human body and be read with an external reader. (Look for a functioning prototype of the glucose sensor within the next six months.) [end]

PositiveID announced that it has completed development of its RFID glucose-sensing microchip, GlucoChip, which will accurately measure glucose levels in individuals with diabetes.

The lab tested a stable and reproducible closed cycle, continuous glucose sensing system that functions in the human blood fractions that are relevant to glucose sensing in the human body. According to the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet, more than 25 million children and adults in the U.S. have diabetes, or over 8 % of the population.
