In late 2002, a Canadian woman set off an airport metal detector. When she was “wanded,” the metal detector consistently sounded when placed near her abdomen. She had undergone surgery four months earlier and had suffered from unexplained abdominal pain ever since. Several days after the airport incident, an x-ray of her abdomen revealed the presence of a 12-inch long, 2-inch wide surgical retractor.

VingCard Elsafe has announced that the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh, Scotland has installed VingCard’s Signature RFID contactless locking solution.

Replacing the traditional magnetic stripe key card system, the new locks will enable guests to simply tap to enter their room using a contactless card or fob. The system can also be adapted to support NFC technology, allowing guests to used their NFC-enabled mobile phone to check in remotely and receive an encrypted room key through SMS. Guests can go straight to their room and tap the phone against the lock to gain entry.

A new survey from Euro Kartensysteme shows that Germans are starting to embrace the idea of contactless and NFC payments.

Out of 1,040 Germans aged 18-59, 43% responded that they would like to make contactless payments if given the opportunity, of which 58% percent would make their payments with a debit card card, 41% with a credit card and 50% with an NFC phone.

The University of Glamorgan in Wales has installed new security measures that require a swipe card to enter certain parts of the building. Access to the building from the main entrance will not be restricted, but students and staff will have to swipe their card to enter the main teaching areas.
