Blue Vector Courts Pharmaceutical Manufacturers

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

With all the talk about pharmaceuticals and RFID, Blue Vector is actively demonstrating its Pharmaceutical Edition, which includes features that are “most popular in pharma deployments.”

These include support for intelligent dock door, conveyor, shelf, and desktop RFID automation stations—either from Blue Vector or from third parties—as well as simultaneous support for multiple tag types including UHF, HF, and long range active RFID tags.

The company’s latest press release, issued today, includes a quote from Russ Klein, Director of Emerging Technology Research at Aberdeen Group: “The success they have had in the pharma market with companies like McKesson and Rite Aid is a testament to the value of RFID in pharma.”

RFID Pharmaceutical Solution: Blue Vector Unveils RFID Platform For Pharmaceutical Industry 4/25/2007

Blue Vector Systems recently announced a Pharmaceutical Edition of its RFID automation platform. This solution offers pharmaceutical manufacturers, packagers, distributors, and retailers item-level track and trace, shipment accuracy, and integration with drug pedigree and authentication systems.

The Blue Vector Pharmaceutical Edition includes features that have proven most popular in pharma deployments. These include support for intelligent dock door, conveyor, shelf, and desktop RFID automation stations—either from Blue Vector or from third parties—as well as simultaneous support for multiple tag types including UHF, HF, and long range active RFID tags.

“Blue Vector addresses the need for a common, convenient platform to manage RFID throughout the supply chain in many different types of operations,” said Russ Klein, Director of Emerging Technology Research at Aberdeen Group. “The success they have had in the pharma market with companies like McKesson and Rite Aid is a testament to the value of RFID in pharma.”

The system orchestrates two-way integration with software applications from SAP, Supplyscape, IBM, and others to provide real-time track and trace, authentication, and drug pedigree tracking system integration. In addition to populating these systems with properly filtered events from RFID readers and sensors, the Blue Vector system also retrieves data from these systems to automate the behavior of equipment and worker alerts. The Blue Vector system automatically distributes this downloaded data (which can include expected orders and the content of shipments) out to each individual point of automation—no matter where it is geographically located—where it is used to provide a degree of “business awareness” that isn’t possible with other RFID systems. By knowing what is supposed to happen at a given operational step, the system can instantly alert workers or send signals to product handling equipment to prevent the movement of non-conforming product.

Klein added, “Blue Vector has done a great job focusing on situations in which companies are tagging products, containers, and assets to improve the performance of their own operations. That’s one of the key success factors for moving a project from pilot to wider scale production—the ability to show immediate business benefits that justify ongoing investments.”

Blue Vector Systems Blue Vector’s rapidly deployable automation platform puts RFID, barcode, temperature, GPS and motion sensors to work for businesses in the pharmaceutical, retail, distribution, and manufacturing industries. As a standalone solution or as an adjunct to current enterprise applications, Blue Vector is trusted choice of industry leaders who are revolutionizing their operations. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto, California. For more information, visit www.bluevector.com.
