Yet another major health facility has vamped up its existing system with RFID technology to better store, track, and manage stuff.

The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano made the upgrade to keep better tabs on its costly, cardiovascular devices and supplies, according to an announcement put out this morning from Mobile Aspects (the provider of the Collin County, Texas, facility’s RFID system).

To support its opening on January 22, THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano successfully implemented a radio frequency identification (RFID)-enabled inventory management system to store, track, and manage their utilization of high cost cardiovascular devices and supplies. As the first and only freestanding, full-service hospital in the region dedicated solely to heart and vascular health care, the organization has also been the first facility within the Dallas-Fort Worth area to use the RFID-based technology to automate device and supply utilization processes and eliminate manual approaches such as paper documentation, stickers, bar coding or button pushing.

Developed by Mobile Aspects, Inc., of Pittsburgh, Pa., the system, called iRISupply(TM), uses an RFID tracking architecture to automate charge capture, inventory management, device expiration management, and other key operational processes within the patient care setting. THE HEART HOSPITAL implemented 14 of the iRISupply cabinet units to manage items such as stents, catheters, and guide wires.

To discuss the benefits of iRISupply with other cardiovascular care providers, Mobile Aspects will be exhibiting at the ACCA 18th Cardiovascular Administrators’ Leadership Conference being held March 21-23 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Basque National Health System has launched a neonatal security system designed to monitor and protect new-born infants using RFID technology.

When a pregnant woman is admitted to hospital, she is provided a tag with a unique identification which can be read in all the maternity zones. When the baby is born, an RFID tag specially designed for the new born is fitted to its ankle.
