The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s announcement by that foreign visitors passing through “simulated ports” in Arizona, New York and Washington would receive RFID tags met wide press coverage. The proof-of-concept would issue passive tags (attached to visas, passports or other documentation) to visitors for the length of their stay in the U.S. The unencrypted tags would store a unique serial number, but no personal information or travel history.

Turkcell brings road toll payments to T11 smart phone

Turkcell, Turkey’s largest mobile operator, has announced the launch of a SIM-based NFC road toll payment application on the Turkcell T11 smart phone.

Developed in collaboration with Bank Asya, the app allows users to migrate their plastic KGS toll payment cards onto their T11 smart phone to pay for fares when crossing bridges and freeway turnpikes.

Accenture wins $71M contract from DHS

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded Accenture Federal Services a 13-month, $71 million contract to add biometric modalities and other enhancements to the US-VISIT program. US-VISIT uses digital fingerprints and photographs. A pilot program included in the contract will test facial and iris voluntary identification enrollment and matching.
