Backers of RFID chips banking on Alien concept

“The funding brings Alien’s total venture funding to $128 million to date. Much of that has been used to build the existing Morgan Hill plant, which will make about 1 billion RFID chips this year, says Alien CEO Stavro E. Prodromou. The company also recently got some $35 million in loans and grants from municipalities connected with its plans to build a new factory in North Dakota which will have capacity to churn out 20 billion tags annually. That gives the company some $73 million to execute on its ambitious business plan.”

Alien Technology and MyDealerLot are working together on a project to provide car dealerships with RFID-enabled client recognition systems and zonal-based inventory location systems.

The joint solution was implemented at a large European luxury car brand in New York City. The automated vehicle technology consists of nine Alien RFID readers, including eight Alien ALR-9900+ enterprise readers and one ALR-9650 single antenna RFID solution.

IC TAG utilizes Alien Technology’s EPC Gen 2 Squiggle, Squiglette, and Square inlays in their IC-TAG RFID labels and tags. Alien uses its own proprietary microchip, Higgs 3, to produce its ultra-high frequency RFID tracking devices.

A variant of malware called Sykipot is circulating that purportedly enables it to hijack U.S. Defense Department Common Access Cards and Windows smart cards, according to Alien Vault Labs. This variant, which appears to have been put together in March 2011, has been seen in dozens of attack samples from the past year.
